We farmers of Uttar Pradesh have been growing Buddha rice since long, but could never commercialise it due to unavailability of resources. ZenHome and Shivaansh have helped us in growing this crop commercially, so now we can grow it on large scale and save this blessing of Buddha.

What is Buddha Rice?

Buddha Rice also known as Buddha’s own rice is an aromatic rice variety found only in 300 sq km of the Northern Peninsular region of India, in Himalayan Tarai. Locally known as Kalanamak Rice, it is an ancient rice that existed since 600 B.C.

Why is Buddha Rice costly?

Buddha Rice can be authentically grown in 300 sq. km region only. Though it existed since 600 B.C., its popularity decreased over time. Buddha Rice crop yield is around one-third compared to the other rice varieties. It is difficult to cut with machines and only survives in organic manure. Thus, mass production of Buddha Rice is difficult. Its long harvest season also added to the plight of the farmers who turned to long-grain Basmati rice, which requires less investment and has more demand.

As Buddha Rice is rare and requires unique soil composition with comparatively more manual labour and time, its cost of production is high leading to a high price.

Difference between Buddha Rice regular and Buddha Rice Royal

Buddha Rice is short grain rice with a divine aroma. Both Buddha Rice and Royal have short grain with the only difference being the crop height. The Crop height of regular Buddha Rice is shorter than Buddha Rice Royal. Also, the aroma of Buddha Rice Royal is long-lasting compared to regular Buddha Rice.

What are the Health Benefits of Buddha Rice?

Buddha Rice is a nutritious rice variety with unique health benefits. It is rich in micronutrients like iron and zinc. Thus, it is a nutritious food source, the regular intake of which prevents nutrient deficiencies and diseases like Alzheimer's. Further, it has a low glycemic index of around 55 which is relatively less than other rice varieties making it diabetic-friendly.
